A Tribute to Harold Pinter at Marxism 2009

© image of Sam West taken by m4sure

I went along last Sunday to the Marxism 2009 event here in London, that took place over a period of 5 days from 2-6 July. And attended the Harold Pinter talk at the Brunei Gallery. The speakers there were Samuel West and the Guardian theatre critic Michael Billington who has also written a few books on Pinter himself. The talk was fascinating for many reasons. To begin with for me personally, to discover that Pinter actually grew up a few streets away from where you live has always been most intriguing. The amount inner strength it took to break away from his meagre beginnings and to become one of the worlds greatest Playwrights is nothing short of amazing. It also meant that he understood real people. The inspiration he produced gave hope to many, that with enough faith in yourself anything is possible.

Both Sam and Michael discussed some of their personal experiences with Pinter, a few were moving and others were hilarious. Sam read from his own written speech that he did in response to Pinter's passing, and he also read from some of Pinter's plays and poems. With one of my favourites being Robert from BETRAYAL. Michael told us some of his very interesting interactions with Pinter as well. The evening ended with a short Q&A type discussion with the audience which at times was pretty amusing. It was a lovely and quite an emotional evening for everyone. Very informative, and great fun too. With the only person missing being Pinter himself, who I'm sure was there in spirit laughing at the lot of us!

Artist Travels the Thames to Celebrate 21st Anniversary

A Hampton artist is sketching and painting her way along the 184 miles of the Thames as part of a month-long mission for charity. Sue Bailey began walking the length of the river on April 4, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the River Thames Boat Project, which owns and operates Richmond Venturer, a specially equipped 26m Dutch barge which provides day and residential cruises and educational activities for people with disabilities. She will record her journey with paintings and sketches and hold an exhibition of selected artwork afterwards.

Little Herbert

© m4sure

I was looking at my old picture files today and I came across this adorable photo of my maternal grandfather as a small child. It is his branch of my family that I am doing research on at the moment. There is mystery, and a tragic turn of events as well. Herbert was the same grandfather who later served in the Eighth Army during WW2 in North Africa and the middle east. He was one of the "desert rats" there as well...

Time is Out of Joint ~ Hamlet

Ethan Hawke as Hamlet (2000)

Let us go in together,
And still your fingers on your lips, I pray.
The time is out of joint—O cursèd spite,
That ever I was born to set it right!
Nay, come, let's go together.

Desiderata (latin for Things to be desired)

© Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

The Marx Bros in Duck Soup

HAHAHAAAAAA-A-A-A!

The Legendary Marx Brothers

Been watching a couple of the Marx Brother's movies today. Have one of their box sets. Was in fits of laughter at some of their antics. They were so talented in their own crazy way. My favourite film by far at the mo is 'Duck Soup'. I've liked the Marx Brothers since I was a kid with my favourite being Harpo. And even though these films are really old, they're still extremely fun to watch. My favourite quotes by Groucho so far include... "Go and never darken my towels again!" Classic.

Here's another pic I like...

Harpo and those scissors! That mischievous look on his face when he snips everything in sight is just so hilarious.

My Family Research Mystery Deepens

I've been doing my family history for many many years. And having investigated most of my branches up to a point, I'm now kind of stuck. I don't seem to understand how to use Parish Registers. It's like being asked to read a passage of Latin, it just makes no sense. I know I will at some point have to drag my *** down to the National Archives here in London and ask them. One family line in particular there's a family mystery and a bit of scandal which involves some wealthy Freemason ancestors, secret families, some disinheriting, and resulted with one of my great grandmothers killing herself when her child was removed from her by in-laws. The plot could be something straight out of a Catherine Cookson story. Maybe I should write a book about it. Just need to do a bit more investigating first. The TV Genealogist Nick Barratt gave me some good advice so I will try his suggestions, and kick start my quest for the truth. I owe it to my genes.
